On your first visit you will fill out a medical case history. We will go through this together. An appropriate treatment plan is determined. This will be followed by an assessment of the affected area. Often I measure the affected limb. Please allow an 1 1/2hr for your first visit.
Treatment for lymphedema involves 4 cornerstones of care often referred to as: Combined Decongestive Therapy (CDT)
1.Compression Therapy: The use of bandages specially designed for lymphedema, to help maintain and reduce swelling. After treatment finishes you will be fit for a compression garment
2.Dr. Vodder Method of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): MLD is a massage technique which helps direct accumulated lymph fluid from the affected area to the nearest unaffected lymph nodes
3.Skin Care: Emphasis will be given to good skin care and prevention of infections
4.Exercise Regime: Special lymphedema exercises will be given. It is especially important to exercise while wearing the bandages as they are most effective with movement
Patients undergo an intensive course of treatment, usually lasting three to four weeks. Maintenance therapy is usually required at much less frequent intervals in order to maintain the reduction. You will be referred to a certified fitter for compression garment. I am an ADP authorizer and can assess you and fill out the application.
