Lymphedema is the accumulation of protein rich fluid in the tissues (extracellular space)
The condition is caused by damage or malformation of lymph vessels. The lymph system is unable to remove this fluid from the area and swelling can result.
Lymphedema is either primary or secondary. Primary cases are those that occur without any obvious cause. They may be present at birth or occur later in life. Some common causes of secondary lymphedema are:
LYMPHEDEMA
-surgeries that result in damage or removal of lymph nodes
-radiation therapy
-cancer
-chronic venous conditions
